GENERAL SUMMARY

The MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) Technologist operates the magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce images of the body for diagnostic purposes. Under the general direction of the Radiologist, performs MRI imaging and related procedures and evaluates images for technical and diagnostic quality.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate on patient medical issues with the physician to determine protocol and procedure.
  • Complete all MRI exams and procedures, obtaining optimal images for physician review according to policy and protocol.
  • Obtain and record patient identification, medical history, or test results.
  • Obtain and review all history of ferrous implants and other possible contraindication for scanning in a magnetic field.
  • Perform venous punctures using universal precautions while administering contrast media.
  • Monitors patient condition continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Practice established safety guidelines and use MRI safety tools and techniques.
  • Assume responsibility for self-development.
  • Clean, maintain, and restock examination and inventory rooms.
  • Perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high field strength magnets and
  • related equipment to produce special radiographic images of specific body parts.
  • Position patients for MRIscans using immobilization and protective equipment to comply with government regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
  • Completes and signs the Patient Screening form and reviews/explains the procedure to the patient.
  • Under guidance and approval of site Radiologist, administers contrast agents according to office protocol. Demonstrates proficiency in IV insertion, contrast medication injection with and without use of power injectors according to department policy,
  • Offload acquired imaging data and pertinent documentation to a central read off site location in a timely fashion.
  • Performs quality control on equipment as set by ACR (American College of Radiology) requirements.
  • Reviews patient history and physician's orders. Researches patient implants for MRI compatibility prior to entering MRI environment.
  • Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
  • Monitors patient condition continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate
  • Follows ACR guidance on MRIsafe practices.
  • Evaluate MR scans for technical quality, collate processed images and sequence of exposure and label appropriately.
  • Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.
  • Maintain accurate patient records.
  • Coordinate scheduling and patient flow.
  • Assist radiologists in developing new protocols and MRI imaging techniques.
  • Prepares patient's imagesfor interpretation by physician.
  • Practices accurate and timely completion of scheduled and unscheduled work to maximize productivity.
  • Practices proper entries and documentation for medical records.
  • Effectively communicates relevant patient information to the physicians.
  • Maintains technical competency through continued education and participates in educational activities.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid State License – Certified Radiologic Technologist.
  • Valid ARRT Certification in Radiography and MRI.
  • BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of routine to complex MRI procedures and protocols.
  • Knowledge of computer applications, including information and billing systems, keyboard input, digital archiving, and retrieving of data.
  • Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR.
  • Knowledge of database management.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, healthcare coding systems, and clinics functions.
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and other third-party payer’s guidelines.
  • Demonstrates understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiopharmacology, and medical terminology.
  • Physical ability to assist patients for transfer from stretcher, wheelchair or in an emergency situation.
  • Critical thinking skills and ability to make decisive judgment.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Skill in operation of MRI equipment as well as applicable ancillary equipment.
  • Customer-oriented with ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
  • Delivers exceptional patient service throughout all interactions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to provide documentation accurately and concisely.

Requirements:

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Associate Degree in Radiography required.

Graduate of Accredited school of Radiologic Technology.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

MRI experience strongly preferred; new grads considered.

1-2 years previous clinical experience preferred.
