Purpose The lifeguard position ensures the safety of pool patrons and assists with aquatic programs and pool operation.
Organizational Relationships Communicates with: Internally - DOAC Staff, Recreation Staff, Public Works, Arena Staff, Community Center and City Auditorium Externally -Community Members, Local organizations, and sports associations.
Essential Functions Safeguards and regulates the conduct of pool patrons. Enforces pool policies, rules, and regulations. Rescues patrons and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid. Tests water quality in pool and maintains appropriate records. Assists in the proper maintenance and sanitary upkeep of the pool, pool area, and locker rooms. Participates in the preparation of daily records. Provides written reports on all accidents. Maintains properly updated safety requirements. Attends in-service training and instructs certain skills to staff. Conducts patron swimming test to assess ability to swim independently and unattended. Provides customer service to patrons, including handling customer conflict and complaints, as necessary. Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor. May provide guidance to less experienced lifeguards during shift. May assist aquatics coordinator in daily aquatic managerial duties. May maintain proper chemical balances in both pool and whirlpool as directed adjusting these balances as directed. May handle mechanical/pump room or chemical problems as necessary.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques. Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department. Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork. Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures. Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions. Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures. Applying judgment and discretion in handling problems, public relation concerns, and issues in accordance with the policies and procedures of the City.
Minimum Qualifications Must possess a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate and American Red Cross First Aid certificate. Must be certified in American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), for the Professional Rescuer or become certified within 30 days of employment.
Working Conditions The lifeguard performs their work at the pool. This position is performed in outdoor weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to chemicals and fumes. Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves continually during working hours; is subject to lifting over 50 pounds.
