Veterans Upward Bound (VUB ) is a federally funded TRIO Program (U.S. Department of Education) designed to help qualified military veterans become college-ready and enroll in a postsecondary school (university, community college, and vocational/technical programs). VUB provides basic skills instruction and educational and career advising to enable veterans to achieve their academic goals.
The goals of Veterans Upward Bound at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are to:
• Promote the development and opportunities of veterans to reach their full potential.
• Help veterans learn in an environment with fellow veterans who understand their unique needs.
• Respect each veteran as an adult learner and appreciate their service to our country.
• Find the right career for each veteran based on their abilities and disabilities.
Job Summary
The initiative aims to deliver educational outreach and support services tailored for veterans pursuing postsecondary education. Responsibilities encompass various activities, including the recruitment and outreach efforts directed at veterans interested in the program. Additionally, the role involves providing personalized academic advising, orchestrating and assessing academic and cultural enrichment activities, and implementing computer-assisted tutoring programs designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to succeed in their higher education journeys.
With an annual influx of approximately 200,000 individuals transitioning from military service to civilian life, the UWM Veterans Upward Bound (VUB ) program is committed to facilitating educational opportunities for these service members and veterans. The program emphasizes various educational pathways, including technical training, two-year colleges, and four-year universities. It ensures veterans can access various academic options that align with their career aspirations and personal goals.
The role of the VUB Academic Advisor is pivotal in guiding students through their educational choices and fostering informed decision-making regarding course selection and degree requirements. This position requires maintaining confidentiality, updating advising records, and actively participating in the creation and execution of academic advising events and programs. The advisor provides comprehensive, timely, and accurate advising services, enhancing student success, retention, and program completion while promoting an inclusive and equitable environment for all participants.
Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver license (or other such valid operator’s permit recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation) and be able to meet or exceed the minimum requirements for driving on state business as detailed here:

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or higher (granted by date of hire)
• Demonstrated experience working with populations that have been historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., first-generation, Pell students, etc.)
• Professional experience in program coordination, case management, or education
• Working experience with data management software (i.e., Blumen software)
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to travel independently and using one’s own means of transportation to meet external stakeholders, including off-campus visits, overnight travel, and occasional conference attendance
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree
• Demonstrated experience in program development for veterans and individuals from varied social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds
• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders within a diverse community
• Experience with policy development and process design
